Description of the Route

We depart from Darwin and head to WakWak, a wetlands region an hour outside Darwin. Here, we can see the beautiful scenery of the top end. We may encounter various bird species and predators like crocodiles. Our journey continues into Kakadu National Park, located 300 km east of Darwin, where we check into our local accommodation.

We explore the park’s landscape and wildlife at the Bowali Visitor Centre before visiting the East Alligator region, the most north-eastern point of Kakadu. Here, we join the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise down the East Alligator River to learn about the creation stories of the area and observe birdlife and crocodiles. We also visit Ubirr Rock, which houses one of the world’s best-preserved Aboriginal art collections. We climb up high to witness a breathtaking sunset. Finally, we head back to our accommodation for dinner.

oday, we will visit cultural centres and art sites that tell the stories of Kakadu and Arnhem Land clan groups. We will take a guided walk through various areas, such as Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) art site, Kunwarddewarddee Lookout, Anbangbang Billabong, Nawurlandja, and possibly Naguluwurr art site. The landscapes here are breathtaking, with escarpments, stone country, woodlands, floodplains, and wetlands. Take time to appreciate the creation stories and artworks in the galleries, and learn about local traditions and wildlife. After a beautiful sunset, we will return to our accommodation for dinner and rest.

We prepare to travel southwest to Katherine and Nitmiluk. The road offers beautiful views of the Australian bush with its vibrant colours. Look out for wildlife like Black Cockatoos, Wallabies, horses, and buffalo. In Pine Creek, a historical town, we take a break and learn about the Overland Telegraph and the gold rush era.

Optional visits to the Pine Creek Museum are available. Upon arriving in Katherine, we visited Nitmiluk National Park and took the NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Cruise for 2 hours. The cruise showcases the stunning rock walls and wildlife of the area. After the cruise, we return to our accommodation in Katherine to relax before our final day of exploring.

This morning, we will be exploring the Katherine area. Our first stop will be at the Hot Springs for a relaxing dip and float. After that, we will visit the Top Didj Gallery, where you can view art made by locals and explore the bush tucker and bush medicine gardens. We will then continue our journey south to the stunning Edith Falls. Here, you can enjoy a picnic lunch, swim in the large plunge pool beneath a waterfall, and take a refreshing break in the beautiful Top End surroundings.

*Solo passengers who book this fare option will be paired in a room with another traveller, where possible, with the same gender but not guaranteed.

Children between 12 and 17 years old must stay in a private room and be accompanied by a legal guardian or adult. Please note that Triple share or family rooms are unavailable, and due to the remote nature of the tour, ensuite facilities are not available at every property.
