Description of the Route

Embark on an adventure with us for one of Darwin’s most celebrated tourist experiences… a half-day excursion observing Jumping Crocodiles on the Adelaide River, where you can encounter some of the planet’s most ferocious and formidable predators in their natural habitat.

Setting off from Darwin city, we journey southeast together for about 60km towards the Marrakai wetlands, a haven for over 280 varieties of indigenous birds and 117 species of reptiles, including the notorious top predator, the saltwater crocodile.

The northernmost part of Australia, commonly referred to as the Top End, hosts over 100,000 saltwater crocodiles, mainly around Darwin, Mary River, and the Adelaide River area, ensuring a high probability of sighting numerous crocodiles during the day in the Northern Territory’s natural water bodies.

The saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile on Earth and is among the most ancient creatures since the dinosaurs. These archaic giants can reach lengths of up to 6 meters (comparable to a small bus) and weigh around 1000kg! A renowned local crocodile, endearingly named ‘Sweetheart’, was apprehended near the Adelaide River for habitually damaging boat motors and raiding local farmers’ cattle. Sadly, Sweetheart died in 1979 and is now displayed as a taxidermied specimen at the Darwin Museum.

Our team is equipped with Wildlife Permits from the National Parks and Wildlife, ensuring that our encounters with wildlife are conducted without causing harm to any animals.
