Description of the Route

Embark on an extraordinary journey to Litchfield National Park, a jewel of the Earth, just about an hour from Darwin City. This world-renowned destination invites you to experience its awe-inspiring natural landscapes, lush monsoon rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, and crystal-clear natural plunge pools. En route, we make a stop at the Adelaide River, where you can opt to experience the renowned Jumping Crocodile Cruise (optional extra) or visit the Fogg Dam Conservation Centre on the ancestral lands of the Limilngan-Wulna people, who diligently steward this area. This centre, a sanctuary for the Top End’s distinct wildlife, is home to various native bird species, turtles, water pythons, and saltwater crocodiles. Our journey includes visiting the ancient Magnetic Termite Mounds, which are monumental and among the largest in the Top End. We’ll also enjoy moments of relaxation, swimming in the spectacular natural plunge pools, spas, and whirlpools at Buley Rockholes or Wangi Falls. Further, we travel to witness the magnificent cascades at Florence Falls or Tolmer Falls, marvelling at their beauty and the dramatic landscapes they’ve sculpted into the rugged escarpment. After a day filled with tranquillity and adventure in this tropical aquatic paradise, we head back to Darwin, feeling refreshed and exhilarated.

  • Walking distance: 1km
Experience the stunning diversity of the Northern Territory on our one-day Litchfield National Park Tour, an excellent opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate. The lands have been significant to the Koongurrukun, Marrangugu, Werat, and Warray Aboriginal people for thousands of years. The varied landscape includes pristine rockpools, flowing waterfalls, and a habitat for native birds and other Australian wildlife, making it an excellent place for photographers. The Litchfield day tour includes visits to iconic natural locations, historical landscapes, and opportunities to swim in beautiful water pools.

The floodplains of the Adelaide River are a diverse habitat for numerous bird species and other animals, such as Black Flying Foxes and Bull Sharks. One can also observe the famous residents of this water system, Saltwater Crocodiles, by taking a cruise.

During this experience, we observe apex predators in their natural habitat. Seeing a crocodile propelling itself out of the water with its powerful tail is remarkable and should not be overlooked.

Our tours of Litchfield National Park offer the flexibility to opt out of adding on the cruise if you have already experienced it. In that case, you can explore the nearby Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve with your guide.

  • Litchfield National Park offers a natural wonderland with majestic waterfalls to explore.
  • Experience the stunning beauty of Florence Falls, a natural oasis nestled within a rich monsoon rainforest.
  • Visitors can swim in the natural plunge pools, spas, and whirlpools of Buley Rockhole or Wangi Falls.
  • Take a cruise along the Adelaide River on the Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise and witness the incredible sight of these massive predators leaping out of the water (additional cost).
  • You can marvel at the impressive size of the magnetic termite mounds in the Top End, which are over a century old.
This reserve, managed by the Limilngan-Wulna People, is a great place to observe the wetlands and learn about the importance of the Adelaide River floodplains to native and migratory species. Visitors can join their guide for a scenic walk through this pristine habitat if they are not going on the Crocodile Cruise. There are many chances to spot rare birds, water pythons, and freshwater turtles. It is also likely that crocodiles will be seen in this wetland system.

The sandstone plateau of the Tabletop Range creates spectacular tropical waterfalls. Visitors can walk down the 160 steps to the swimming hole at Florence Falls or enjoy the view of Tolmer Falls from the lookout.

The monsoon rainforest creates a unique tropical environment. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk and admire the breathtaking views of this lush natural wonderland.

The itineraries for Litchfield tours may be subject to changes to accommodate seasonal differences, and there may be instances where certain spots in the parks may be closed, or swimming may not be permitted. As our main concern is safety, we make appropriate plans to ensure our guests enjoy their experience thoroughly.

Nestled in picturesque bushland, the age-old Buley Rockholes provide various levels for a refreshing swim or a serene chance to lounge in the shallow waters, enjoying this slice of paradise. The water here, akin to a spa, ranks among the cleanest, allowing for a natural ‘spa’ experience as the brisk cascades offer a massage, a gift from nature itself!

Alternatively, we might explore the renowned plunge pool at Wangi Falls’ base. This enchanting swimming spot, surrounded by extraordinary natural splendour, promises to rejuvenate and invigorate you as we explore the park.*

*Our itinerary is flexible to accommodate seasonal variations. Occasionally, certain areas in the parks may close or restrict swimming. Prioritizing safety, we adjust our plans to ensure our guests enjoy the most engaging and safest experience possible on our Darwin Litchfield tours.

Intriguingly, humans aren’t the only ones devising innovative methods to beat the heat! We take a pause to be amazed by the incredible Magnetic Termite Mounds. Discover how these ingenious termites build massive ‘apartment-style’ structures towering above us, presenting excellent opportunities for photography. Please take a moment to stroll among these structures and uncover the hidden scientific principles that guide their construction.
